If you are having any issues viewing this site please make sure that your browser is a current version. We recommend that you have Internet Explorer 7 or newer, Mozilla Firefox 3.0 or newer, or Safari 4 or newer. If you are still having issues with viewing our site or particular pages please let us know.
There are two main methods of navigation within the site. On the left is the "Site Menu" where you will find links to this FAQ, Description of Programs, Horse Schools Questionnaire, Career Listing, Intercollegiate Associations, Scholarships, Advertising, and Terms of Service. On the top, just below the banner, you will find several links to Home, Search Horse Schools, and World Map of Horse Schools.
Horse School Questionnaire - A list of questions to ask school representatives, both on the phone and during visits. Add to the questionnaire as you think of things you may want to know about a school.
Possible Careers - An extensive list of over 250 careers involving horses.
Description of Programs - Basic information on each school, including the type of school, the kind of majors and degrees offered, and a summary of costs (tuition, room, and board). Also included is a short description of the school or program, a description of the equestrian facilities, the ratio of classroom courses to hands-on equine courses, opportunities for competition, and contact and website information. The description notes whether the school is approved or accredited by any association or organization.
Intercollegiate Associations - A list of intercollegiate and interscholastic association across the globe. Some of them also include listings of what schools participate in the association.
Scholarships - A listing of scholarships specifically from horse associations and/or for someone majoring in equine studies.
You can search for schools in multiple ways within this site. The first is the Description of Programs which is in the Site Menu bar on the left hand side of the screen. If you want to look at a list of schools within a particular country or state this is your best option. You can also search via the Search HorseSchoolsOnline Page which allows you to enter in multiple fields including a search box, school riding associations, school specialties, country and state. The Map of Schools gives you a look at where all the schools are located. You can click and drag the map to what country you wish to look at, zoom in and zoom out, click on the marker to view the name of the school, and then click on the name to go to that school's page. An alphabetical index of all the schools in the database are listed in the left hand Site Menu under All School Listing
The term “horse school” covers a wide range of educational opportunities, from secondary schools and accredited universities, to the clinics and camps of well-known trainers and specialty riding programs. As long as the focus of what you are learning involves horses, the place in which you are learning can be termed a horse school. The two main classifications of horse schools are (1) universities and colleges, which offer an accredited degree (A.A., A.S., B.A., B.S., etc.), and (2) specialty schools, which typically offer a certificate or diploma upon completion of the program.
What are the icons on the top of school listings?
The small graphical images at the top of most school listings tell you at a glance if a school offers a certain riding or study option. To see a complete listing of Descriptive Icons and what areas they represent click this link.
What is the Annotation link at the bottom of each school listing?
The Annotation link is for you to make private notes about a school. These notes will not be made public on the school page, but every time you go back to that school page you can either scroll to the bottom or click on the Annotation link to go to your notes. You can also use this function to keep track of schools you are interested in or not interested in by making an Annotation on each school and then going to "My Account" and clicking on the Annotation link. All annotations you have made will be listed there.
What is the New Comment link at the bottom of each school listing?
The New Comment link is for leaving your reviews, impressions, or comments about that school. These comments will be displayed publicly and shouldn't be confused with the Annotation link. Prospective students, current students, past students, and staff are welcome to post comments about the school. Comments can be positive or negative. Objectionable content (slander, porn, spam, inaccurate information, and lies) will be removed and the user will be issued a warning or barred access depending on what is posted.
Certain things from the book aren't on this site
In the process of putting the book version of Horse Schools into this website we found that certain aspects of the book didn't translate as well into the website. Two parts in particular:
1) Introduction section of the book has been formulated into "the Horse Schools Blog" where the author, Angelia Almos, and other guest bloggers will blog about various aspects of horse schools, the college hunt, and other items related.
2) Equestrian Federations index from the book wasn't included in this website. You can find a list of equestrian federations throughout the world via the "Federation Equestre Internationale website."
We have done a lot of research to try to make this site as complete as possible, but we know that schools might slip through the cracks and haven't been made aware to us. If you work for such a school or know of such a school please feel free to email us and let us know.
I work for a school and wish to update our listing
