The Equine Industry option is designed to prepare students for employment as managers and for related agribusiness opportunities in the equine industry. The option combines course work in equine production, nutrition, breeding, genetics, and diseases with studies in the management aspects of an equine enterprise. At the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center, one of the world’s outstanding Arabian horse breeding farms, the Arabians are utilized in the animal science courses related to light horse production, research, and training. The Equine Research Center (ERC) offers both undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to study horse health and function, reproductive physiology, exercise physiology, energetics and kinematics of locomotion, animal behavior, parasitology, and immunology. Students may also study exercise physiology using a modern high-speed treadmill shared by the two centers. Students perfect their knowledge and technical skills by collecting and processing semen and embryos, growing tissue cultures, assaying hormones, and analyzing scientific data. They are also instructed in the use of sophisticated computer programs (e.g., the Peak motion analysis system) that assist in the analysis of scientific data. Quality research is emphasized, and student researchers are encouraged to present the results of their work at local, national, and international scientific forums.
