The horse program at HPA is available to every student at the school, grade 3 and above, regardless of expertise or experience. Fine English and some Western tack are provided. Instruction in equitation, trail riding, and horse care and maintenance is stressed. The program, staffed by professionals, offers English and Western pleasure, polo, polo-crosse, dressage and eventing, hunter and show jumping, and trail rides in the Kohala Mountains. HPA stages a major combined training event every year, and students are encouraged to work towards participating in this effort at all levels. The regular program offers the only varsity regimen in the state of Hawaii for students who wish to earn their letter. HPA also offers a special intensive session for riders each summer. The school regularly participates in horse shows, and students are encouraged to get involved in these weekend activities. Student instructors receive credit for help with an elementary program on Friday afternoons.
