KEMI is a curriculum intended to recruit an educated, enthusiastic work force with an affirmative, lifelong participation in the equine industry. The internship program is designed by educators and farm managers with the purpose of providing a unique “hands-on” theoretical training for students. These internships are intended to attract presently enrolled or recently graduated college or university students who are interested in pursuing a career in the equine industry. The internships convene for periods, covering the 22 week breeding season (January to June) or performance season (July to December). The program tuition covers the costs of speaker’s fees, course text and a membership to the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Manager’s Club (KTFMC) during the internship period. Each intern will be placed on a horse farm as a full-time employee and working in multiple specialty areas. The KEMI curriculum complements the practicum by providing weekly lectures and occupational learning experiences. One meeting each month includes a reservation to attend the KTFMC’s meeting, including a meal and a guest speaker. This unique opportunity enables the interns to interact with industry professionals and form network affiliations that enhance future employment opportunities. The course curriculum prepares the interns for the individual responsibilities that accompany the internship, including relevant expectations and demands of employment.
