English and Western riding styles taught. The Horse Science Technology Program prepares you for a variety of positions in equine enterprises. During the first year, you’ll study genetics, breeding, horsemanship, training, nutrition, management, and judging. You’ll also take courses in communication, accounting, human relations, computer science, math, and merchandising to become a well-rounded professional. More than 50 percent of instruction takes place in a laboratory setting using Kirkwood-owned horses or horses from outside the campus. Advanced students train their own horses or horses sponsored for training. Horse Science students complete an eight-week, paid internship during their final semester at Kirkwood. Students work 40 hours each week at a breeding farm, dude ranch, trail riding establishment, breed association, or training stable for race or performance horses. During your internship, you will apply your lab and classroom skills in an actual work setting. Plus, you’ll make some great industry contacts that could lead to a position after graduation. Instructors will help you find an internship site, in Iowa or out-of-state.
