Western riding style is taught. Penn State has a long history of horse involvement dating from the 1940's. The University has been a leading breeder of AQHA halter and performance horses and once stood the well-known Quarter Horse stallion Skip Sioux. Students run a sale of two-year-olds each spring. The Equine Program at Penn State includes teaching, research, and adult/youth extension. Courses are Introductory Horse Production and Management, Advanced Horse Production and Management, Horse Handling and Training, Applied Equine Behavior, Equine Reproduction and Breeding, Advanced Equine Nutrition, Horse and Man, and multiple courses in selection and judging. Independent Study and Special Topics in Equine Science are also available. Lecture material is widely supplemented with hands-on laboratories and projects. Partnerships/Job Placement Internships are available with horse farms, feed and pharmaceutical companies, equine publications, racetracks, veterinary practices, and other equine industry enterprises. Career fairs are held at the college and university. The equine department also serves as a contact/liaison for industry representatives.
