United States Eventing Association Instructors’ Certification Program

Each ICP Workshop runs for 3 consecutive days. There are 8 candidate instructors in each Workshop and 1 ICP faculty member. The Workshop curricula address the teaching of all three phases of event riding: dressage, show jumping, cross country riding and jumping. Each day at every Workshop, the ICP faculty member lectures, discusses, and model-teaches; each day at every Workshop, all candidate instructors take turns practice-teaching, with discussion following. Candidate instructors also study required and recommended readings to develop better analytic and teaching skills for all three phases of eventing. They prepare also to take written tests in Horse and Stable Management, Teaching Theory and Practice, and Safety/Medical Information. Further, they prepare to take a hands-on Horse and Stable Management test. Before attending an Assessment for ICP certification at a specific ICP Level, all candidate instructors must attend the appropriate Workshop(s). At the Assessment, each candidate instructor teaches a lesson in each of eventing's three phases and completes the written and hands-on testing mentioned above. If his/her performance meets the standard for passing, he/she becomes ICP-certified. Continuing Education activities are required of all instructors, once certified.
