B.Sc. (Honours Degree) in Equine Science is a four-year program that provides students who wish to follow a professional career in the horse industry the opportunity to underpin their career aspirations with specialist knowledge and skills. The course of study has been developed because of the strategic economic importance of equine and related industries and the consequential need to produce highly qualified personnel with the specialized knowledge to exploit the potential of these industries. The overall aim of the program is to equip students with degree level competence in the disciplines of equine science and a choice of professional studies in either the disciplines of equitation science or equine business management. The Honours Certificate in Science (Equine Science) is offered over two years with a similar format to the Degree. The Diploma in Science is a further year of study after the Certificate. Students are required to pass the Certificate in order to progress to the Diploma. Students who obtain the Diploma award may then enter year three of the Degree Program. The Honours Certificate and Diploma Program offered through distance learning are highly flexible in nature, but similar in content to the full-time program (www.iei.ul.ie).
