As part of the program students will get to work with horses, in years three and four of the course, students will undertake the modules ‘Horses 1 and 2’, topics which will include assessment and management of horses with lameness, diarrhea, colic, respiratory problems, common injuries, metabolic diseases, hernias, horses requiring castration, management of horses with neurological signs, skin problems, cardiovascular problems, urinary tract problems, eye problems, anemia, jaundice, oedema, weight loss, fever or exotic diseases, equine stud farm management and breeding, and special considerations for the assessment and management of neonatal and older foals. The Equine Centre provides 24 hour 365 day a year care for horses and donkeys, and also provides training for over 300 veterinary students each year. The students in third and fourth year spend rotations in the Equine Hospital, where they assist interns, residents (veterinarians under-going specialty training) and specialist clinicians in the diagnostic and treatment of out-patients and in-patients.
