The University of Nebraska—Lincoln offers several avenues for students pursuing careers in the horse industry. Within the Animal Science major, students can focus their studies with the Equine Science option. Through this, students will gain hands-on experience through riding, training and evaluation courses, and explore the scientific basis for horse production through specialized courses in nutrition and reproduction. They can also complete the prerequisite coursework needed to apply to veterinary school through the Animal Science major, Veterinary Science major or Pre-Veterinary Pre-Professional program. UNL students benefit from several opportunities for extracurricular involvement with horses, including the UNL Equestrian Team, UNL Horse Judging Team and the UNL Rodeo Club. Horse industry study tours, to Kentucky and Texas/Oklahoma, as well as internships are also encouraged. As UNL is Nebraska’s land grant institution, students also have unique opportunities to become involved in Extension and Research programs.
