School Information
Type of School:
Public College
Tuition Costs:
Tuition and related costs are available on the college website
Facilities:
The program is housed at Rough Terrain Farm, a full service equine facility located minutes from the main campus. Students study within a real business, which offers 24 stalls/run-in sheds, an oversized indoor with heated viewing area and bleachers, and opportunities for students to board their own horses in either the full service barn or the 10 stall co-operative barn that is managed by an upperclassman equine student.
Class ratio:
The curriculum listed on the Equine Studies webpage of the college website shows all courses that include a lab, where students have hands-on practice time. Labs and Equitation classes generally are 2 hours per week. Additional hands-on time is available for work-study students who choose to work at the barn, as well as for students who secure a part-time position working for Rough Terrain Farm.
Showing:
Vermont Tech does not have a competition riding team, but is developing a horse judging team.

The Vermont Tech Equine Studies Program is designed to combine hands-on practice with theory; for example, courses like Training I and II and Riding Instruction I and II include labs, where students implement the techniques being explored in discussions and lectures. Accordingly, the program is limited to 15 slots for incoming freshmen each year to guarantee safe and effective learning conditions. An additional strength of the program is its emphasis on obtaining a strong business background, which provides increased employment opportunities for students after graduation and throughout their careers. Required business courses cover such topics as accounting, marketing, small business management, personnel management, computerized accounting, and website design. The Equine Studies program is based on the philosophy that professionals must be open to exploring multiple disciplines and various sectors of the equine industry. In their equitation classes, all students experience carriage driving, dressage, and western/stock seat and then can choose areas of specialization beyond or within these
three disciplines.
